He is well known as a soloist, sometimes exploring unusual site-specific acoustics, and has released seven CDs of solo saxophone music.
He has toured and broadcast in Europe, Japan, North America and Australia, and was featured, playing solo, in the BBC TV programme Date with an Artist.

jason stein quintet
jason stein - bass clarinet
keefe jackson - reeds
jon irabogon (NY) - reeds
josh abrams - bass
frank rosaly - drums

the jason stein quartet brings together chicago bass clarinetist jason stein with three of his favorite improvisers. with joshua abrams on bass, frank rosaly on drums, and keefe jackson on tenor saxophone and contrabass clarinet, the band dives into compositions by stein, as well as underexplored compositions by jazz luminaries lee konitz, warne marsh, lenny tristano, and thelonious monk. stein's new chicago quartet seamlessly integrates rigorous written material with fierce and imaginative improvisational flights. the band's debut release the story this time (delmark records) comes out october 18th. for this concert stein's quartet will be joined by acclaimed saxophonist jon irabagon (mostly other people do the killing, i don't hear nothing but the blues).

devin hoff quartet
devin hoff
- bass

mike reed - drums
tomeka reid - cello
nick mazzarella - alto saxophone

here's devin's bio from his website:

I play contrabass (bass violin, double bass, string bass, dog house, etc), bass guitar, write songs, sing a little, and play some guitar. I have been doing these things for 20 plus years, over half my life, and love music more every day.
I have been fortunate to play with so many great musicians of so many backgrounds and aesthetics, it seems almost pointless at this point to mention some and not others based on levels of fame or success that are more based on luck than musical or personal merit. And besides, Mike Watt told me not to drop names. :)
I have written music for solo bass, metal bands, punk bands, country singers, chamber ensembles, jazz collectives, film, dance and theater.
My life has been saved and enriched and my spirit strengthened by so much music, and I am just trying to add my own sense of struggle and beauty to the Universe as best I can.
